Intermittent Air Conditioning Problems
In the blazing summer heat, nothing is more frustrating than an intermittent air conditioning problem. Not only is it uncomfortable and annoying, but an A/C issue can indicate a bigger problem as well. Thankfully, Auto Cool is here to help. No matter what type of air conditioning system you have, our staff can handle all of your needs.
Air and Moisture
Extra air and moisture in A/C systems can cause a lot of problems. An A/C system that blows cold air for a while then warm air is probably freezing up. This can be caused by air and moisture that allow ice to form and block tubes.
An A/C system should contain less than 2% air by weight.
For every 1% increase in the amount of air, there will be a drop of about one degree in cooling.
More than 6% air can cause a drop in temperature and your evaporator to freeze.
Air can get inside a system through:
Failure to evacuate the system before recharging
Using refrigerant that is contaminated with air
A/C Electrical Problems
Electrical problems are one of the most common causes of intermittent air conditioning.
Manual A/C Systems:
Low pressure cutout switch problems: This switch prevents the compressor from running if the refrigerant level is low. If it is not reading correctly, it can prevent the compressor from coming on.
Faulty compressor clutches: The magnetic clutch on the compressor requires full battery voltage to work. If the voltage to the clutch is low, the clutch coils have too much resistance or the air gap in the clutch is too big, the clutch may not drive the compressor.
Broken compressor clutch relays: Relays must receive voltage when the A/C is on. Check the relay wiring and ground connections. If using a jumper wire or routing battery voltage directly to the compressor clutch makes the A/C work, the relay is probably bad.
A/C control switch issues: The switch may be worn and not have good contact when it is turned on.
Automatic A/C Systems:
Problems with the control module or head: This usually requires a scan tool to read fault codes and perform diagnostics.
Bad temperature sensors: Fixing these usually necessitates a factory scan tool to perform diagnostics on the system.
